Food Meets Books at Library’s Edible Book Festival

Book lovers who love food will have a chance to combine two favorite activities when they enter a creation of reading-inspired food in the upcoming Clearwater Edible Book Festival. The event will be held at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library in Eau Claire on Saturday, February 21, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Eau Claire Room on the library’s lower level.  The pre-registration deadline is February 13.  Observers are welcome, and the public is invited to view the entries and vote for their favorites between 10 a.m. and noon.  Judges for the contest are Serena Wagner and Janae Bruenig from the VolumeOne design team.  Prizes will be awarded around 12:30 p.m.  A related storytime and craft project for kids and families is planned.   The schedule is as follows:

  • Delivery of entries (9 – 10 a.m.)
  • Storytime & craft for kids & families (10:15 – 11:15 a.m. Youth Services Program Room)
  • Public viewing and voting  (10 a.m. –  Noon)
  • Judging (11 a.m. – Noon)
  • Vote counting (12 – 12:30 p.m.)
  • Presentation of awards (12:30 – 1 p.m.)

The basic rules for participating in the contest are simple:  entries must relate to books or reading and must be primarily edible (although they will not be taste-tested or consumed).  Five entry categories are available: individual adult, teen or teen group, family, food professional, and library staff.  Inspiration for entries may come from sources such as a poem, cover art, a famous author, a beloved character, or a classic or best-selling book.  Those looking for ideas are encouraged to search “edible books” through such online sites as Google and Flickr.  Pinterest users may also view the “Edible Book Fest” board on the library’s Pinterest page.
