Mental illness is the healthcare industry’s “elephant in the emergency room.” Nobody wants to talk about it, nobody wants to take it seriously, and — here in the Chippewa Valley — nobody wants to provide physicians or beds for it.

Colleen Bates has a long personal history with medical practice, and with fighting for practical mental health care. In this installment of “Microscope: Heath Issue, Part 1” she and I have a long and healthy conversation about what mental illness looks like, how pervasive and insidious it is, and and why it should be more seriously addressed by the medical community of our community.
