The Galápagos Giant Tortoise (Chelonoidis nigra) is impressive in every detail: It can weigh three quarters of a ton. It is the longest-lived of all vertebrates, though no one knows exactly how long. It’s not one species, but ten, evolved in isolation on separate islands.
The Giant Tortoise had no natural predators, until Homo sapiens came along, and since it has neither the capacity or the space to run, survival has become a three quarter ton challenge. In A Wisconsin Farmboy in the Galápagos, Part 4, we explore the efforts of big-hearted humans to save the tortoise from the hard-hearted humans who came before.
