If you love both travel and nature, the Galápagos Islands are a dream destination. In fact, the word “paradise” frequently comes up in the short list of descriptors.

But the opportunity of walking with the animals in a pristine setting is not a guarantee. It is a hard-won privilege. Throughout our rather reckless history, we humans have gummed up the fine-tuned works of many a dynamic natural system. And these renowned islands, as isolated as they are, are not immune from the wide-ranging forces of short-sightedness or exploitation.
