We spoke with Library Director Pamela Westby about an exciting new policy that’s giving local kids a fresh start.
“Here at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Library in Eau Claire, we’re really excited to be rolling out a “Fines Free” policy tat really says less is more: The less fines, the less hassle, the more information and the more access everyone gets when they come to our library.
We ran some numbers and found that there were 8,000 cardholders who had their cards blocked because they owed at least ten dollars worth of fines. So we felt that 8,000 people was way too many for the city of Eau Claire.
Since the policy went into place, we have unblocked the cards of 5,300 people, and of that number 1,100 were children under the age of 18.”
