Mel Sundby, Face-to-Face

Eau Claire County artist Mel Sundby likes to hole up in a shed in his sideyard. Not much room there, with all the pottery waiting to be glazed, and all the characters crowding his workspace.
For decades, Sundby has been filling his days, the shed in his yard, and regional art galleries with thousands of characters — made of malleable gray clay and fired to bisque at high temperatures in his kiln. Those characters come in all manner of poses, backgrounds, and names, and each springs from Mel’s head wearing the face he gives them.

Here in words and video, is a bit of “face time” with a prolific sculptor of indefatigable imagination.
