Microscope: Gun It

What do Americans love most?
Freedom?
Family?
Football?
Shopping?
Television?
Playing the lottery?
Answers may vary, but the candidates might include one or more of the above …and firearms, obviously.

By percentage of population, more Americans own guns than in any other nation in the world — a volume that equals about a gun per citizen.

That statistic may be a reflection of constitutional privilege, or of psychological malaise, as murder and suicide rates in the United States top the rest of the world, and Americans barricade themselves into their own schools — to “protect” themselves from neighbors with guns. In the “land of the free,” we are being held captive by escalating gun violence.

In this installment of “Microscope,” two Wisconsin legislators discuss their concerns with America’s fanatical gun culture, its disturbing history of gun violence, and the legislation they are proposing to deal with both.
